Summary
Markus Martin has been developing software and working with advanced computer systems for many years prior to his formal education, which is ongoing at the University of Utah. At REI he has been providing expert systems administration support and maintenance, particularly with Unix based systems. The most complicated of these tasks has been installing, configuring, and now maintaining collaboration software for the office. He is also involved in REI software projects such as MerSim, REKS, Blast Event Simulation, integrating REI models into Aspen worksheets using COM and CORBA, and various other miscellaneous tasks, including the odd shell script now and again.
Mr. Martin's primary academic interest is in utilizing computers in the area of
linguistics. He is experienced in implementing stemming and parsing algorithms and their application in such things as full-text searches and linguistic feature extraction. The field requires a variety of knowledge like software development, language syntax, and discrete mathematics, which typically come from separate academic fields.

- Maintained network with approximately 150 users and 100 workstations. Managed authentication and file servers, connectivity of remote sites, and database access to mission critical unit data. Deployed and repaired Windows desktop systems.

- Participated in airborne assault, helicopter and boat operations, small-unit reconnaissance and patrolling. Became proficient in weapon systems such as M249 SAW and M4 w/M203. Received Expert Infantryman's Badge. Qualified in basic first-aid and driving vehicles up to 5 tons, including 40 pax bus.
